Initial design thoughts
Firstly when designing the cabin, some ideas where generated from the main concepts identified in the exemplar, Newmarket House, these include:
- Interior space is generated by a larger landscape solution
- Blurring the line between interior space and exterior
- Redefining the backyard, creating it as the main living and recreational area and reducing its ability to facilitate private more activates
- Creating obvious public and private zones
- Designing specifically for the South East Queensland climate
- Disconnecting the inhabitants of the house with the public environment but not the house itself.
- Using barriers and openings to allow for desired views and breezes to be experienced and to block them out in other areas.
These quick very sketchy drawings look at design ideas mainly linked to zoning space into public and private, creating the backyard as the hub of the house, capturing natural views, privatising the house whilst maintaining essential breezes and views, creating changeable spaces and creating open living and recreation areas for maximum space usage.
The first is a two levelled dwelling that divides the bottom level into a private space and the upper into the public. The bedroom, study and lower outdoor area are private and the kitchen, living, dinning and upper outdoor area are public. The bathroom is a public and private area. What was trying to be achieved in this design was to further recreate the backyard, making it a raised second levelled area.
The second looks at a one levelled idea that that divides users as public and private. This one also looked at the division of zones but was more focused on obtaining breezes and views from its surrounds
