This project embodies a number of interests of the practise currently being explored in a number of backyard projects: - The development of schemes where interior space is generated by a larger landscape solution. - Concepts of walled landscape and its relationship with interior space planning. - To yield works with modernist sensibilities using humble materials in a crafted architecture. - Reconciling the disengagement between the pre-war Brisbane house and its historic service garden (AIA, 2010)
Newmarket House as an Environmental Filter
- The open plan living area allows for better airflow throughout the entertaining areas.
- The permeability of the garden rooms and throughout the house acts as natural ventilation.
- The garden room acts as a climatic filter, protecting the interior across its depth and harbouring a nest of rooms within (The New Backyard, 2011).
- Bedrooms and private areas are positioned on the western side of the house so they are protected by the morning sun.
- The bifolding door system allows for natural lighting in the open entertaining area and through to the private spaces.
Newmarket House as a container of activities
- The residence is zoned into obvious public, semi-public and private spaces.
- Newmarket House is a response to resisting neat or pragmatic distinctions between interior and exterior (The New Backyard, 2011).
- The design is about extending and amplifying space (The New Backyard, 2011).
- The Newmarket House looks at reversing the typical sequence of entrance, public space then private.
- The public and functional areas such as the kitchen and dining areas have a connection with the exterior and surrounding landscape.
- Owen and Vokes look at creating the backyard as a hidden but public space and the entrance/front of the house as private space. They have done this by designing a direct entrance to the backyard along the side of the house, this allows visitors to bypass the front of the house and go straight to the backyard.
Newmarket House as a delightful experience
- The garden room allows views through the open plan living area and further out into the backyard.
- Interior opens up to exterior this connecting one with the landscape without having to literally venture into the backyard.
- The outdoor living area gives the feeling of an semi enclosed interior space but in reality it is more of an outdoor space as it cannot be secured as they are window openings with no glass.
- The effective division of public and private space allows for the house to be used as to separate zones
- The viewpoints from the house look onto the natural landscape but block unwanted views such as neighbours.
